The Pros and Cons of Video Chat On Your Phone

The benefits of a video chat app on your phone are obvious. It’s as close as you can get to speaking in person with your contacts. This sort of technology sounded like science fiction just decades ago and now it’s becoming an expected feature on smartphones. The children of today will likely wonder how people got along without Rounds video chat on phones and take it for granted.

One of the best applications for video chat apps is in the business world. Some of the apps have become so simple and effective that conference calls on them have become incredibly common. If a computer malfunctions during a video conference call, having a backup resource on a smartphone is very wise and handy.

Video chatting on phones is also wonderful for parents who often have to travel as well. Being able to see your child in motion in real time while miles away can help soothe feelings of homesickness. Video chat on your phone lends a greater depth to communicating from a distance, making it far more personal than a phone call or a text.

Obvious benefits aside, there is the question of just how much video chat apps can be relied upon for effective communication. It is a common complaint that while smartphones are wonderful for applications, games and various distractions of all kinds, their capability as actual communication devices can be lackluster. Obviously, this is gradually improving, but is it improving at a fast enough rate?

How important is reliability and consistency in terms of service? While the idea of a freshman in college video chatting with his grandparents on a smartphone sounds like a miracle of modern technology, the reality is that it may just end up being a frustrating attempt that goes haywire. Cellphone service can be spotty at times. Coupled with the cost of a data plan that would cover the usage required for video chat, this can make the effort less than worth it.

However, for someone who doesn’t have access to a computer but has access to WiFi, video chat apps on a smartphone are often as good as their computer application counterparts. And in time, with improvements to cellphone service, the popularity of video chat apps will likely see them match and surpass other means of communication. The pros are rapidly stacking against the cons for video chat on phones.

3 Ways to Set Up Successful Web Hosting

When it comes to setting up web hosting, there are several options available. Each option has advantages and disadvantages, and those who will operate the site must determine the best course for their particular needs. Here are the three most popular options and some facts about them.

1. Self-hosting
In the past, the most popular option was to set up one’s own web server and run it from a home or office. For some businesses, this is a viable option; it allows complete control over the website, but comes with some major caveats. First, the server must be secured, and proper security generally requires help from experts. In addition, this option may be more expensive. Fast Internet speeds are expensive, and those who host the website will be responsible for all maintenance and repairs. In most cases, it is better to use a dedicated hosting provider.

2. Virtual servers
One of the major revolutions in web hosting has been virtual servers. With virtual servers, it is possible to host multiple operating system installations on a single server. Computers have become much faster in recent years, but the demands required by web hosting have not increased as quickly. As a result, virtual servers are more than adequate for most websites. Most virtual servers, however, host multiple accounts on a single virtual server. While this leads to low-cost hosting, it can also lead to performance issues. Still, most virtual servers perform well even while hosting multiple websites, and sophisticated monitoring technology allows hosting companies to scale performance effectively. For those running small websites, this is the best option in most cases.

3. Dedicated servers
For those who do not wish to run their own servers but do not want to be forced to share a virtual server, dedicated servers may be the best option. Some dedicated servers are run as virtual machines, but the owner of the virtual machine will not have to share with others. In other cases, the dedicated server will be a complete server rented by the client. This provides top-notch performance without the hassles of hosting one’s own server. For those who do not mind spending a little bit extra for the speed, power and flexibility of owning a server, this is the best option available.

Switching to iPhone 5

So I finally made the switch to the iPhone.

I have been a dedicated Blackberry user since the beginning, when typing wasn’t as simple and similar to the old Nokia.

Then I moved to the Blackberry curve and faced the same issues many Blackberry enthusiasts found with the ball getting stuck and having issues.

Next up was the Blackberry bold. Finally – all the initial issues and bugs were fixed. The keyword was a standard QWERTY and no longer had troubles switching between things.

This lasted for 3 years. Until sadly enough my phone slowed down. Was dropped in water and after time started to fall apart. First it was the camera, then the sound. It no longer rang.

I gave into peer pressure and bought the iPhone 5. If I am going to switch, it has to be in style. Smilie: :-)

Stay tuned…..

Microsoft Seeks to Challenge Amazon and Google with New Cloud Based Services

Cloud based services are becoming more common. Companies such as Google and Amazon have been offering consumers cloud based storage and applications for awhile and Microsoft is stepping in to compete in this new environment with a couple of major new offerings. Hosted Microsoft Dynamics appear in many forms from cloud based productivity suites to dynamic ERP solutions.

Office 365

office 365Microsoft Office has long been a front runner in office productivity suites. More businesses use Microsoft Office than any other office suite. In an effort to remain competitive and reduce business costs, Microsoft now offers a cloud based suite known as Office 365. For a small fee per user, Office 365 allows users full access to service such as Outlook and SharePoint. The advantage to using this system is the lower equipment costs required. Typically, a business wishing to operate an Exchange email server would be spending thousands of dollars on equipment and licensing. By moving this service to the cloud, those equipment costs are eliminated and licensing is much more affordable. The risk of catastrophic loss is also mitigated by storing business essential data off site by default.

Windows Azure

azureWindows Azure is more of a platform than a service. Azure allows businesses to create web applications using a variety of programming languages. These applications are then deployed and managed via a global network of Microsoft managed data centers. Just like Office 365, this cloud based platform lessens the likelihood of catastrophic loss and decreases equipment costs typically associated with custom applications.

Applications built using Azure can be run on either Windows or Linux virtual machines. Other benefits of using Azure include support for multi-tier scenarios and automated deployment, data management using SQL Database, and media services including content protection. Although Azure was originally released in 2008, some improvements were released in June 2012 allowing websites to be built using ASP.NET, PHP, or Node.js. This added even more flexibility to an already well adapted platform. The key to the success of Azure is in its scalability. Whether the application is created for 20 users or 20,000, Azure seamlessly adapts making it a desirable option for businesses planning for future expansion.

Although many of Microsoft’s cloud based services tend to be business oriented, the release of Windows Phone 8 has also brought some of this technology into the hands of consumers. As cloud computing continues to advance, more services will be based on this technology. The benefits are endless and the market is getting more competitive which can only lead to improved quality and cost for consumers.

Will Electronic Cigarettes Replace Traditional Cigarettes?

For years, increased tobacco taxes have been hitting the wallets of smokers hard. As the price of a pack of cigarettes continues to climb, many smokers, unable to afford their habit, have been inspired to quit. While most people acknowledge the health risks of smoking, it doesn’t make quitting any easier even if it means saving money. Enter electronic cigarettes.
Electronic Cigarette
Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, have been on the market for years but have only recently attracted attention in the face of steep cigarette prices and a health conscious public. Smokers can still get their nicotine fix but at a fraction of the cost and without the harmful side effects of traditional cigarettes. As millions of smokers transition to e-cigarettes, it raises an important question: will electronic cigarettes replace tobacco cigarettes?

Electronic cigarettes look like regular cigarettes and are designed to offer a similar smoking experience. E-cigarettes consist of three primary components: the cartridge, battery and heating element. Liquid nicotine is stored in the cartridge, and the smoker inhales the resultant vapor produced by the heating element. Unlike tobacco cigarettes, no smoke is produced. The only by-product is water vapor.

Most e-cigarettes are rechargeable, and smokers are able to buy an assortment of nicotine cartridges of varying potency and flavor. Being able to control the amount of nicotine is great news for smokers looking to quit. They can slowly wean themselves off of nicotine until they are using none at all.

However, the major appeal for most smokers is the savings. The liquid nicotine cartridges are not subject to the same taxes of traditional cigarettes and are less costly to produce. By switching to electronic cigarettes, smokers can expect to save 50 to 80 percent.

Smokers can also use e-cigarettes at many places where tobacco cigarettes are not allowed. They produce no smoke making them welcome at many non-smoking establishments and don’t violate city ordinances prohibiting smoking in public spaces. Electronic cigarettes are also odorless eliminating one of the chief complaints of traditional smoking.

Will electronic cigarettes replace tobacco cigarettes? While it might be too early to call this one, there is no denying the increasing popularity of the electronic cigarette.  There are already many companies like SafeCig e-cigs competing in the marketplace, and it should only get more popular as more and more smokers try them.

The History of Airplanes

The story of airplanes and manned flight is a testament to human ingenuity and determination. Ever since ancient times, people have been attempting to fly, whether by balloon, helicopter, or glider.

The Wright Brothers and their Flyer at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, in 1903 are, of course, credited with the first manned, heavier-than-air flying machine. The Wright Flyer drew on the glider designs of great European aviation scientists Octave Chanute and Otto Lilenthal, but the Wrights were the first to solve the problem of building a powered glider that could be controlled by a pilot. Alberto Santos-Dumont of France continued to develop the technology, producing faster and more stable designs.

When World War I broke out, planes were quickly adopted for bombing and reconnaissance, which led to further improvements in control and engine systems. The period between the world wars is known as the “Golden Age of Aviation.” Biplanes like the Wrights’ quickly became obsolete, replaced by aluminum-bodied monoplanes similar to today’s pleasure aircraft. Pilots like Charles Lindbergh, Wiley Post, and Amelia Earhart became household names, and stories of their feats in the new planes filled the newspapers. The earliest designs for jet engines were also developed during this period, and functional jet aircraft were in use by the end of World War II.

The Second World War also brought about advances in the mass production of airplanes, and after the war, the first globe-spanning airlines arose. Air travel, which previously had been a luxury for the wealthy and well-connected, became increasingly common, and larger jet airliners cut travel times and helped shrink the world. A trip from America to Europe, which in the past could have taken a week or more, could now be accomplished in hours. Today, an airline ticket is affordable for almost everyone, and a jet charter company can provide quick flights to any destination where a plane can land.

Supersonic flight was achieved in 1947 when Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier in his Bell X-1 jet plane. For commercial flight, supersonic travel proved to be more a curiosity than anything, with British Airways’ Concorde facing repeated complaints about the noise it made and its massive fuel requirements. However, military aircraft have continued to advance on the cutting edge of technology, leading to planes like the F-22 “stealth fighter,” with its extreme speed and maneuverability. Another major achievement in air technology was the Voyager, in which Jeana Yeager and Dick Rutan flew around the world without needing to refuel. Only time will tell how the airplane will continue to improve and develop in the 21st century.

Apple Wins Landmark Case Against Samsung

Hey readers! It has been quite the weekend following the news about Apple winning their case against Samsung for copyright infringement. I think the jury made the right decision, seeing as Samsung’s internal game plan was to copy Apple! Not only that, just looking at the two models side by side makes it QUITE apparent that Samsung knowingly copied the iPhone’s hardware and software design. Well done, Apple. Hopefully this will bring more creativity to the smartphone market.

Will the Next Galaxy S get Even Bigger Than the Last?

The Next Generation

Samsung has introduced the new Samsung Galaxy S with great results. Many features of the previous models are still a part of the new Galaxy S model but with a few new ones as well. Although both models are great choices for anyone looking to invest in a mobile phone, these two still have distinctions that set them in their own class of excellence. You might be asking yourself, which one is better for me? Well, looking at a comparison of both phones can help you determine the best choice for your investment.

galaxy s3

Display and Design

The first thing you want to look at is the display and design of the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Samsung Galaxy S2. When it comes to both aspects, the Galaxy S3 wins easily. The Galaxy S3 will have a 4.6-inch HD display with a pixel resolution of 1280 x 720. On the other hand, the Galaxy S2 will only come equipped with a 4.3-inch screen display and a pixel resolution of just 800 x 480. As far as the display and design between both phones go, the Galaxy S3 will win in this round.

Processing Speeds and Memory Storage

While the Galaxy S2 carries a 1.2GHz processing speed, the Galaxy S3 will far surpass it with a speed of 1.8GHz. The memory RAM is also another factor that the Galaxy S3 will win over the S2 with a memory RAM capacity of 2GB. Moreover, the Galaxy S2 only carries a memory RAM of 1GB. The Galaxy S2 will offer the user two alternatives of the phone in a 16 or 32GB internal memory model. However, the Galaxy S3 can give you these options, along with another choice of the 64GB memory storage model.

The Results

Just by looking at some of these specs, you can really see the difference and the better investment. Judging from the successful results the release of the Samsung Galaxy S3 has had, it surely looks like it will be a bigger success than the last one. The amazing picture quality, camera display, processing speed, memory capacity and the slick, thin design of the Galaxy S3 is what will make it attractive to all those avid mobile phone users.

A Video Chat Dilemma: Google vs. Rounds vs. Airtime

There are many apps and software downloads that offer free video chat. Google, Rounds and Airtime offer video chat and are sufficient for basic use, but they are not created equal.

Google

The Google Hangouts’ interface allows multiple users to interact simultaneously. In addition to video chat, Google users can watch YouTube videos together. The highly interactive nature of Google can be used for casual conversations with many friends, but also study groups. Google continues to offer their video chat plug-in for one-on-one chats with friends. Since many users already have a Gmail account, they will have no problem getting started with video chat.

Rounds

Rounds takes the typical video chat interface and adds other methods of user interaction. The app is available for multiple platforms, but is most commonly used as a Facebook app. Users can chat with their friends or meet new people with similar interests. In addition to talking, chat partners can play games, surf the internet or watch videos together. This interaction adds more dimensions to the online environment, and decreases the redundancy that is common on many social apps and sites. Although interactions are limited to one-on-one chats, Rounds provides users with a more realistic social experience.

Airtime

Airtime, a new video chat site, was launched in early June 2012. The main objective of Airtime is to allow users to interact with Facebook friends, via video. In addition to chatting with friends, the site can pair users based on interests, to randomly chat with each other. Chat partners have access to each other’s posted videos and interests, which seems invasive. In general, the random chat feature does not have wide appeal and does a poor job of matching users based on genuine interests. Users are more likely to chat with friends than strangers when using Airtime. Facebook already has video chat, so Airtime’s approach creates redundancy. Users also report poor audio and video quality.

The best free video chat interface depends on individual needs and interests. Google has the ability to video chat with up to ten people which decrease’s the need for multiple video chat programs. For users that want to video chat with friends on Facebook, make new friends and interact beyond chatting, Rounds offers the most entertaining experience. Unfortunately, Airtime does little to stand up against Google and Rounds.

App Fever

With the iPhone 5 to be released this September, it’s time to start reviewing apps to load it up with. Every time a new iPhone comes out, the online lists start buzzing with top apps new and classic. From the basics such as Facebook, Twitter, and Skype to the more exotic apps such as Mixology, Can I Drive Yet, and Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock (the latter 3 usually used in that order), apps have taken over the smart-phone world and are ubiquitous and varied. Not having the right apps on your phone is equivalent to going camping without a Swiss Army Knife. So which apps should you load up on?

In the beginning of the year, Time Magazine graciously put out a 50 Best iPhone Apps of 2011 list that encompasses the top game, travel, lifestyle, music & photography, entertainment, and social apps of the past year. And Time isn’t the only list-maker of this sort. Techradar.com put together its list of 60 must-have iPhone apps in 2012, and coolmaterial.com added a 15-app list of cool apps this year as well. Whether you’re looking to connect with friends, mix music, play games, or enhance our life in some way, having the right apps is no longer a fun suggestion, it’s a necessity.
